Measuring What Matters

We believe in data-backed, community-centered progress. SCIS tracks the environmental and social impact of every shared infrastructure project we support—ensuring that funders, hosts, and the public can see the difference these spaces make.

Reducing waste by keeping materials in use.

Each Thingery helps reduce waste by enabling borrowing instead of buying—and by extending the life of donated items. This cuts down on unnecessary consumption and keeps usable goods out of landfills.

Lowering emissions through shared use.

Borrowing equipment reduces the need for new manufacturing, shipping, and packaging, while also eliminating emissions from individual trips to rent or buy. SCIS estimates GHG savings across these categories.

Creating equitable access and new community ties.

We aim to expand access to shared resources—especially for those in co-ops and non-market housing—while fostering connections through hands-on workshops and peer learning.

Helping members save by sharing.

By borrowing instead of buying—or even renting—Thingery members save significantly on tools, equipment, and other occasional-use items.
